About 1000 Hills

Founded by a Rwandan now based in Melbourne, 1000 Hills Beans exists to close the gap between Rwanda's exceptional coffee farmers and Australia's specialty coffee community.

Reconciled with Coffee

It started with a grandmother's farm
In our household, falling below 80 percent at school had consequences. Jules's father ran a serious household — excellence was not a suggestion; it was the minimum. Fall below it and the punishment was swift: you were sent to help your grandmother during the coffee harvest on her farm in the hills of Western Province.
Jules hated it. The farm was on a hill you had to climb up and down all day.
His older brothers Eric and Clement felt differently.
They saw something Jules had not yet learned to see. They saw potential.

THE SEEDLING INVESTMENT

Aging trees are not a farming problem — they are a solvable one.

Rwanda has 26 million coffee trees. Nearly 30% are over 30 years old and producing below their potential. Every season, 1% of 1000 Hills profit goes directly into new Red Bourbon seedlings co-planted with our producer partners — because healthier trees mean better cherry, better cherry means better coffee, and better coffee means a stronger price for everyone in the chain.

This is not charity. It is how we invest in the quality of what we sell.
